Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal produce directly from a farmer in their community by purchasing a “share” of the farm. Through the purchase of a CSA farm share, consumers support this year’s crop with money up front for a membership, and in exchange, each week during the growing season, they will receive a box of local, fresh, and seasonal produce directly from the farm. CSAs help the local farmers by providing the literal “seed” capital for farmers to prepare their operation and plant their crops for the coming seasons. Purchasing a CSA is a great way to learn the seasonality of produce in the Lowcountry, introduce your family to new and interesting fruits and vegetables, learn farmer recommended recipes, and delicious investment back in your local economy. All of these great benefits are why you earn 10 points during our Eat Local Challenge by signing up to participate in a local CSA!
It is important to think about purchasing a share before the season is in full swing so the farmers can plan accordingly and plant enough for everyone. If it is your first time, it is recommended that participants get a smaller share or split a share with a friend or neighbor until you are used to the process. In addition to produce, CSAs may offer “add-ons” of eggs, dairy, or seafood. There are also a number of producers that offer exclusive CSAs for seafood (Community Support Fishery [CSFs]), beef and other locally raised animal products. Below is a list of producers currently offering CSAs. For more detailed information on share size, prices, and pick-up locations please check out our Farm Fresh Food Guide.
