Dirt Works Incubator Farm, the first of its kind is South Carolina, provides infrastructure and support to reduce the risks for new farmers launching their new farm businesses. As the second step in the Growing New Farmers Project, the Incubator Farm provides three years of production and business support for participating farmers. Participants lease an acre of land for $2,000 a year and are provided access to a tractor, packing facility, walk-in cooler, tool storage, irrigation and assistance from a mentor farmer. The initial 10 acre parcel located on Walnut Hill Plantation, Johns Island, is divided into 1-2 acre plots for up to 6 farmers and 1 acre for a Teaching Plot for apprentices, students, and the public. During the last year of the program, farmers are matched with prospective land-owners to continue to expand their farm business.
The Incubator Farm - the first of its kind in the state - opened in the Fall of 2012. Meet the Farmers!
