Sonitrol South Carolina was launched in 1978 strictly dedicated to equipping Tri-County area schools with alarm systems. From installing silent alarms in schools, Sonitrol’s base expanded steadily to include residential and small business clients. Co-owner John Rama says Sonitrol’s client base is now evenly divided between residential and small businesses across the Lowcountry.

Rama served in the SC House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993. He and his wife Katie along with their three children proudly call the Lowcountry home. The Vice President of Sonitrol South Carolina is John’s brother, Alan Rama, who joined the Sonitrol team 25 years ago in an effort to strengthen its ties as a family run business. Both John and Alan are active community members which they count as a necessity in having a successful business with more than 10,000 customers.

Sonitrol considers their personalized customer service as a primary contributing factor in being voted Best Security Company by Charleston City Paper readers two years in a row. “Our representatives like to meet each new customer in person to tailor a security plan specific to their needs,” says John. “We don’t do over the phone sales. Our focus is to protect you right the first time, it’s not all about the sale. It’s about our customers.” That customized service and attention from Sonitrol also comes with the latest state-of-the-art security devices such as motion detectors, wireless equipment, products with longer battery life, as well their signature Audio Detection System – just to name a few.

Sonitrol has 60 employees, many of whom have been with the company for over a decade. Their call center, located in North Charleston, is open for tours so the public can see the Sonitrol operations first-hand and meet the local response team who are all trained to help protect the Lowcountry’s homes and businesses.

With an aim to continually strengthen their ties with the local community, Sonitrol joined Lowcountry Local First as a member in 2013. “I think it’s important to know and support other local businesses,” says Rama.
